A St. Lawrence County resident in his or her 70’s who tested positive for COVID-19 passed away this morning at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center due to complications associated with the virus, according to a statement from the hospital.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones during this time of loss,” said Richard Duvall, CEO and President of CHMC. “While we are prepared for the impact of the virus, this is an unfortunate reality none of us want to see. As COVID-19 continues to spread in our communities, we must all do what we can to keep each other safe.” Duvall emphasized the importance of all North Country residents doing their part to slow the spread of the virus and protect those in our communities who might be at an elevated risk.

The most vulnerable include those over 65 and those with underlying health conditions. Steps that everyone can take to slow the spread of the virus include:

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or sleeve or a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands afterward.

• Washing your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom or before eating. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

• Avoid touching your face – especially your eyes, nose, and mouth – with unwashed hands.

• Stay home if you have a cold- or flu-like symptoms, for seven days after your illness onset and three days after your fever resolves without fever-reducing medicine, and avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• It is critical to practice social distancing and to encourage our family, friends, and neighbors to do the same. Social distancing is deliberately increasing the physical space between people to avoid spreading illness. Staying at least six feet away from other people lessens your chances of catching COVID-19. While it may be disappointing to hear that so many sports events, cruises, festivals, and other gatherings are canceled, there is a public health reason for these measures. These cancellations help stop or slow down the spread of disease, allowing us to care for patients over time more readily.
