North Country politicians express appreciation for Sen. Little following retirement announcement

Following the news that Sen. Betty Little will not seek reelection in 2020, some North Country politicians have expressed their appreciation for her service.

In St. Lawrence County, Little’s district includes Parishville, Clare, Colton, Hopkinton and Piercefield.

“From starting out as an educator to her 25 years in the state legislature, Senator Betty Little’s life exemplifies the meaning of public service,” said Sen. Patty Ritchie.

A Republican from Heuvelton, Ritchie represents the 48th Senate District. Its northern reaches include Ogdensburg, Canton and Gouverneur. It goes as far south as Oswego County.

“Since I was elected to the Senate, Senator Little has been my mentor, colleague and trusted friend. She has been a vocal partner when it comes to fighting for issues most important to the hardworking people of the North Country. She is an outstanding example of the impact one individual can have when they seek to serve the public and make a difference.

“While I will certainly miss her when she is gone, I will be forever grateful for her guidance, wisdom, and grace.”

North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik said Little “sets the bar” for public service.

“Betty Little truly sets the bar for her tireless and effective public service to her constituents,” said Stefanik.

“Our community has watched in awe as Betty dedicated decades of her life to representing the hardworking families of Upstate New York. I often get asked about women in politics, and I always proudly point to our local icon Betty Little who quietly shattered glass ceilings before it was hailed by the media. She has been a tremendous role model for so many. I am proud to call her a legislative partner and friend. The North Country is tremendously grateful for her service and sacrifice. I wish Betty and her entire family all the best in this next chapter. She has earned it."
