MASSENA — The Nicandri Nature Center of Massena is warning that ticks have already appeared this spring in St. Lawrence County.
Ticks can infect humans with Lyme disease, which may cause joint inflammation, fatigue, and neurological problems.
Staff found “multiple ticks on their clothing” while hiking off-trail at the nature center, according to their March 25 Facebook post.
“This isn't a reason to stay in! We just want you all to know tick season has started and that you should take appropriate steps to protect yourself when playing outdoors,” the post said.
The nature center advised the following: stay on trails, avoid playing in leaf litter, wear light colored clothing, tuck pant cuffs into socks, use insect repellents, check regularly for ticks and remove any attached ticks immediately.
