POTSDAM -- Physician assistant Samantha Lucas recently joined the medical staff of St. Lawrence Health System’s Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Lucas will provide services in the Urgent Care Center at the Helen Snell Cheel Medical Campus, 49 Lawrence Ave.

Lucas earned her Certificate of Physician Studies at Clarkson University. She is a Potsdam native with a desire to serve the people of the surrounding communities. She said her grandmother was a nurse and served as a great example to her of the impact someone can make in health care.

“I love being a physician assistant. Every day I have the opportunity to make someone’s day better - to affect their life and health in a positive way. I especially enjoy having the privilege to serve the wonderful community where I grew up,” she said. “While I was in college at Clarkson University, I had amazing mentors and advisors who helped me find the right position in health care that fit my passion in urgent care.”

PAs are licensed medical professionals who work under the guidance of a physician. They conduct physical examinations, diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and are qualified to assist in a multitude of medical and surgical procedures. PAs order and interpret diagnostic tests, perform suturing and castings, and work beside physicians in the operating room.
