Massena volunteers checking in with more than 600 seniors during pandemic

MASSENA -- Over 30 Massena Wellness Committee volunteers and spiritual leaders are making daily calls to 600 senior citizens every day to help them during the pandemic.

Also, community volunteers are manning a 24-hour service for calls to the wellness line, which will remain open through the crisis, said Wellness Committee Coordinator Zachary Monroe.

“Anyone is welcome to call. The wellness line number is 315-705-2811. It’s available 24/7. We have information to share about all the resources available to you, or if you’re just in need for some social conversation as a result of staying home and staying safe,” Monroe said.

The group has helped individuals get face masks, access to medical transportation for appointments and put them in contact with MILC (Maximizing Independent Living Choices) for help with a variety of resources.

The Massena Wellness Committee really can’t thank their volunteers enough for everything they are doing, Monroe said.

“The outreach calls are going really well, and the seniors are so receptive and appreciative of the check-ins,” he said. “I think the best thing out of all this is hearing the other person on the end of the line really perk up and sound happy to hear from someone else in the community. You can really get a sense of just how important this is.”
