MASSENA -- Massena Memorial Hospital will end their DaVinci robotic surgery program at the end of June.
MMH Interim CEO Pat Facteau announced the decision at Monday night's Board of Managers meeting on the heels of a $605,000 loss from operations in March.
He said they will save about $460,000 annually by not renewing their contract to lease the device.
"The docs did a good job with it. We just weren't doing enough [robotic procedures]," Facteau said.
He added that patients will still be able to get the same procedures done at MMH, they just won't be done with the DaVinci robot.
In other news, Facteau also said they are planning to add three doctors sometime over the summer -- an obstetrician/gynecologist, an allergist and a pediatrician. He said that will save money on contracting out for those services.
"With pediatrics and primary care there might be a substantial improvement for our bottom line," Facteau said.
