MASSENA -- Four outdoor ice rinks are open for free public skating.

They are at the Alcoa Field, on Danforth Place, Howard Street and at the Massena Arena annex.

Warming shacks are open 4 to 8 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, "weather- and staff-permitting," Massena Rec Director Mike McCabe said, but people are welcome to skate any time.

The outdoor rinks generally remain open until sometime in March when the ice melts.

Recreation Department workers create the outdoor rinks. They clear away snow and then use a tanker truck or fire hose to set the ice.

Massena Recreation also offers indoor skating at Massena Arena.

On weekdays they usually have free senior skating from 9 to 9:50 a.m., free parent/tot skating from 10 to 10:50 a.m. and $2 public skating from 11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Shinny hockey is usually held on weekday afternoons.

Their complete schedule, which is subject to change each week due to various hockey programs, is posted on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MassenaRecreationCommision/
