MASSENA -- The majority of village spring cleanup vouchers, about 4,000, weren't redeemed.

"I think it's a pretty good program. I got good feedback from some people. Not everybody likes change. A lot of people embrace the program," DPW Superintendent Hassan Fayad said at Tuesday's village board meeting.

The village mailed out 4,865 vouchers and 864 were redeemed between April 22 and May 4, Fayad said. Residents could redeem a voucher to turn in a load of junk at the county transfer station.

The total cost to the village was $27,818, about a 50 percent reduction from last year, he said, and the total weight turned in for disposal was 120.64 tons.

"It seemed to work relatively effective, low maintenance," Fayad said.

Mayor Tim Currier and Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire both said they mostly received positive in-person feedback and encourage people to contact them to discuss any problems.

"If there's a problem or an issue, please let us know ... I encourage people to talk to us and tell them what our issues are," Currier said.

"I had zero negative complaints," Lebire said. "I saw a couple rumblings online but it's hard to have a good dialogue online. Encouraging people to talk to us in person is critical."
