Jaws of Life used to extricate victim following personal-injury accident involving four vehicles in Potsdam

POTSDAM — The Jaws of Life were used to rescue a person from a vehicle following a four vehicle personal-injury accident near Jreck Subs at the intersection of Depot and Market streets on Saturday.

The Potsdam Fire Department, Potsdam Rescue and Potsdam police responded to the accident Feb. 22 around 4:49 p.m., according to the fire department.

At the time of alarm, Potsdam Fire Engine 49 (Mark Maroney) responded and arrived at 4:51 p.m. Engine 49 was positioned at the intersection of Depot Street and Market Street. 36-1 (Tim Jerome), 36-2 (Mark Bradish), 36-3 (Dan McGregor), and 36-4 (Jutin Perry) responded to the scene.

Once on scene, rescue personnel discovered four vehicles were involved in a motor vehicle accident.

A vehicle on Depot Street was found to have a person still inside of the vehicle that was trapped, the fire department said.

Firefighters reportedly stretched the Hurst Jaws off of Engine 49 and started to extricate the victim out of the vehicle. Firefighters also stretched a 100 foot bumper line off of E-49 for precaution and also had an ABC extinguisher.

Firefighters were able to successfully extricate the victim out of the vehicle. Two patients were transported by Potsdam Rescue to Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Engine 49 provided lighting for the scene. Firefighters also provided traffic control during the time of the accident.

The vehicles were removed from the scene by Johnson's Towing.

Firefighters used speedy dry to soak vehicle fluids up and removed debris from the roadway.

The scene was investigated by Potsdam police.

Potsdam Fire was in service at 5:56 p.m.
