POTSDAM -- Village Trustee and Town Clerk Cindy Goliber is running again for the clerk’s position, but won’t be running again this year for the village board.
If she was running for both, “my name would be on the ballot for both positions and I don’t think that would be appropriate” or fair to voters.
“I would consider running again” for the village position. “I really enjoy doing that, because I think I bring a broad personal perspective to that job,” Goliber said, “but my first priority is town clerk,” her full-time job for 24 years.
“It would be difficult running for two positions at the same time, and I think it might be confusing to people.”
Goliber, a Republican, was appointed to the village board after Trustee Nick Sheehan resigned in February 2018.
Sheehan, a Democrat, resigned from the board during his first term when it became clear, in spite of earlier advice to the contrary, that his position with Sheehan Contracting could constitute a conflict of interest with village operations, particularly where contracts with the company were concerned.
Goliber volunteered and was appointed to fill the seat until the next election in November 2018, when she was elected to serve out the remaining year in Sheehan’s term.
Goliber says she has filed her petitions with the county Board of Elections to appear on the November ballot once again for the town clerk’s position. She is not aware of any opposition certified to be on the ballot.
In the village, Democrats and Republicans will be caucusing to choose candidates for the village trustee vacancy.
