Gas explosion killed miner near Gouverneur

GOUVERNEUR -- State police say a gas explosion caused the death of a miner Oct. 2 at Empire State mine, 408 Sylvia Lake Rd., southeast of Gouverneur.

The accident, which occurred around 11 a.m., killed Brendan P. Demasters, 40, of Middleburgh Heights, Ohio, troopers said.

The accident happened 3,800 feet underground, where Demasters was working, police said.

He was reportedly transported to the surface to awaiting EMS personnel from Gouverneur Rescue. Demasters was taken to Gouverneur Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 12:33 p.m., by Dr. Michael Kiger.

St. Lawrence County Coroner Joseph White authorized the removal of the body to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where an autopsy was performed by Jefferson County Medical Examiner Dr. Samuel Livingstone Oct. 3.

Dr. Livingstone determined the cause of death to be cervical vertebra fractured due to blunt force trauma. The manner of death was ruled accidental by the coroner.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MHSA) is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
