Updated at 3:20 p.m. to include statement from District Attorney Mary Rain
POTSDAM -- St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain, won't seek reelection.
Her announcement comes on the heels of an announcement from former St. Lawrence County Chief Assistant District Attorney David Haggard that he intends to announce his candidacy at the Potsdam Civic Center tomorrow at 3 p.m.
Haggard served as Rain’s second-in-command for two years before resigning in March of 2016. Haggard was replaced by Frank Cositore, who also resigned from the position.
Both Haggard and Cositore have made allegations of wrongdoing against residing District Attorney Mary Rain.
"I wish good luck to all the candidates as I will not be running," Rain said in a prepared statement.
Rain said Haggard was released as Chief Assistant District Attorney from this office for several reasons. She says he had many indictments dismissed for lack of preparation and lacks the temperament necessary to lead. She also accused Haggard of becoming physical with a member of her office, but did not elaborate.
"During his entire tenure, unbeknownst to anyone, including this office and the courts, he was represented by defense attorney Edward Narrow in a civil action, prejudicing both this office and Mr. Narrow's clients, raising serious questions about Mr. Haggard's good judgment," she said.
