Firefighters battle blaze on Morristown island, save camps from being destroyed

MORRISTOWN — Several fire departments battled a blaze on an island and were able to save two camps from being destroyed, according to the Morristown Fire Department.

Morristown fire and rescue personnel were dispatched to a reported brush fire at 12:35 p.m. Friday on CR 6, officials said. A short time later it was reported that the fire was on Jennies Island.

Morristown fire department arrived a short time later and began shuttling firefighters and equipment to the island, fire officials said. Soon after arriving at the island it was determined that one small out building was on fire and the fire was threatening two camps. Firefighters immediately set up to force the fire away from the two camps.

The firefighters were successful in their efforts to protect the two uninvolved buildings. The fire is under investigation.

Morristown fire was assisted by Brier Hill Fire Department, Heuvelton Fire Department, Gouverneur Fire Department, Hammond Fire Department, Lisbon Fire Department, Rensselaer Falls Fire Department, Morristown Auxiliary, Brier Hill Auxiliary and Heuvelton Auxiliary. Alexandria Bay Fire Department was on standby at the Morristown fire station.

Also assisting on scene was St. Lawrence County Car 1, Matt Denner, Car 4, Jeff Hammond and Car 9 Nick Friot.

Morristown units were back in service at 4 p.m.
