Candidate for Congress Doheny picks up endorsements in Essex, Fulton counties

Fulton County’s Republican Committee has endorsed Matt Doheny of Watertown as their favorite in the race for the 23rd Congressional District seat in the U.S. House now held by Democrat Bill Owens of Plattsburgh.

The Doheny campaign says the candidate has also been endorsed by the chairs of the Essex County Republican and Conservative parties.

“Republicans and Conservatives must stand together, united behind one candidate who has the knowledge, the experience and the resources to defeat Bill Owens in November,” said Jackson. “Matt Doheny is unquestionably the best candidate for the job,” said Essex GOP Chair Ron Jackson.

Bill McGahay, who leads the unconstituted Conservative committee in Essex, added: “Matt Doheny understands the needs and concerns of the people who call Essex County and the North Country home. Now more than ever we need a fiscal conservative who will fight against the big spending liberal Obama crowd in Washington who are mortgaging our children’s future with reckless fiscal policies and disastrous health care proposals.”

This is Doheny’s first official Republican endorsement of the 2012 campaign. The St. Lawrence County Conservative Committee has also previously endorsed the Watertown resident.

The full Essex County Republican committee is expected to make its official endorsement March 21, according to a Doheny spokesman. Doheny was backed by the full committee during his previous campaign – as well as all of the other GOP committees that endorsed a candidate before the primary.

At their meeting Tuesday in the historic Fulton County Courthouse Tuesday, members of the Fulton County Republican Committee endorsed Doheny for Congress.

“Matt has been a strong presence since day one,” said Sue McNeil, chairwoman of the committee. “He continues to show up, participate and discuss the issues with us. He knows all of Fulton County and he’s proven it to us. We believe he will work hard for Fulton County along with all the other counties in the district when he’s elected.”

Fulton is the first Republican committee to endorse a congressional candidate in the 23rd district. This is the committee’s second endorsement of Doheny; the group also backed the Watertown businessman during his 2010 campaign,

“I am humbled that Chairwoman McNeil and the Fulton County committee have again given me their support,” said Doheny. “I’ve promised them I will work hard every day to ensure Fulton County has a representative in Washington who will work hard to promote growth, keep taxes low and apply common-sense, north country values to our country’s problems.”
