DEC brings ice anglers in St. Lawrence County up to date on regs

The state Department of Environmental Conservation wants to be sure that people who want to fish on the ice in St. Lawrence County know what’s permitted and what’s not on the wide variety of waters offering angling in the county.

In general, ice fishing is permitted in the all non-trout waters unless otherwise prohibited, and in certain trout waters including the St. Lawrence River.

If you are unsure whether a water is considered trout or non-trout, contact the DEC Regional Office in Watertown at 315-785-2239.

Fish may be taken in accordance with the seasons, minimum size and creel limits in effect in that water.

No more than seven ice-fishing lines may be used, except as noted. No one may use an ice fishing line that has more than five lures or baits or a combination of both, or has more than 15 hook points in any combination of single, double or treble hooks.

The operator must be present when ice-fishing lines are in the water.

Ice shanties must be marked on the outside with the owner’s name and address in letters at least 3 inches high. Shanties must be removed from all waters by March 15 to prevent them from falling through the ice in spring and becoming hazards to navigation.

There is much specific information for anglers in St. Lawrence County at the DEC’s St. Lawrence County Special Fishing Regulations page at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/31493.html
