Dairy Princess Program celebrates 55th anniversary by raising funds for milk donations to local food pantries

CANTON -- This year marks the 55th anniversary of the St. Lawrence County Dairy Princess program and the committee is raising funds to help meet the dairy needs of our local food pantries.

According to the Great American Milk Drive, one in six people, including 16 million children, are affected by hunger in the United States. And while hunger relief organizations do their best to supply those in need with food, they don’t always have the resources to provide nutrient-rich options, to help support their clients’ dietary needs. Milk is one of the most affordable options and is packed with nutrition. One 8-ounce glass contains 9 essential nutrients including 8 grams of high-quality protein, as well as calcium, vitamin D and potassium, three nutrients noted by the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report as nutrients of concern – nutrients many Americans don’t get in their diets.

A collaborative fundraising effort with members of the Canton Chamber of Commerce will be held the week of May 26 - 31. Participating merchants will be collecting donations for this effort. The Dairy Princess and Court will be hosting special events with participating chamber merchants to help promote the importance of having high-quality dairy products in everyone’s daily diet.

The theme for the 2019 Dairy Princess Parade is “Milk for All.”

The committee hopes everyone will join them in making dairy available for all members of our community.

The committee is proud to work collaboratively with the generous Canton Chamber businesses and encourages the community to visit and support local businesses who invest in making a difference in our quality of life.
