Cornell Cooperative Extension farm holds open house in Canton

CANTON -- Cornell Cooperative Extension and 4-H Spring Open House at the Extension Learning Farm engaged community members with hands-on learning activities and educational opportunities recently.

A highlight of the festivities was the “first milking” of the new Incredible Milking Cow. She is housed at the St. Lawrence County Cooperative Extension Learning Farm, and will be making her way across St. Lawrence County at multiple agricultural venues such as the Dairy Princes Parade in June, Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair in August, and Farm Bureau’s ‘Day on the Farm” in September,’ as well as other St. Lawrence County Farm events.

The Incredible Milking Cow is an interactive “talking” educational tool that will be used to demonstrate and teach adults and youth the process of milking and producing milk.

She is full of many facts about the dairy industry and what a typical day is like on the farm. Beth Martin, Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair Board President and representative from Scotch Acre Farms said, “We hope this investment will give us the opportunity to promote the positive aspects of the dairy industry.” The Incredible Milking Cow will be making her next appearance to the public Saturday June 1 at the Dairy Princess Parade at the Canton Village Green.

Attendees of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Open House voted to name the Incredible Milking Cow Charity. A fitting name as the money to purchase her was made possible through the generous donations from the agriculture community in St. Lawrence County. Multiple Dairy Farmers have voiced their gratitude for the collective efforts.

“A sincere thank you to all the sponsors who made this endeavor a reality,” said Patti Fisher, National Farm Bureau Promotion and Education Committee member & representative of Mapleview Dairy.
