Strong penalty killing and a timely power-play score, coupled with a solid goaltending performance by graduate transfer Frank Marotte (Longueuil, QUE) piloted 11th-ranked Clarkson University to a season-opening 1-1 draw against Michigan at Yost Arena on Friday night.

Michigan outshot the Golden Knights 35-31. Clarkson was 1-of-4 on the power play and killed off all seven of the Wolverines man-advantage opportunities.

Clarkson's penalty-killing unit was tested early in the first six minutes, but the Golden Knights held the Wolverines off the board and the two teams exchange scoring chances over the next five minutes. A little more than halfway through the stanza, it was Clarkson's turn to go to the power play.

Two consecutive Michigan penalties gave Clarkson a brief 5-on-3 power play. After getting back to 5-on-4, Michigan's penalty killing unit was tired and the Green and Gold took advantage.

Shane Kuzmeski (Grayslake, IL) kept a loose puck at the right point and spotted sophomore Josh Dunne (O'Fallon, MO) open at the left post. The senior defenseman put the puck on Dunne's stick and the assistant captain tapped it into the open side of the net for a power-play score and 1-0 lead. Junior defenseman Connor McCarthy (LaSalle, QUE) picked up the secondary assist.

Late first-period penalties left Clarkson facing a 5-on-3 man-advantage for Michigan. The Green and Gold killed off the first penalty and the clock ran out on the stanza. Clarkson took a 1-0 lead to the locker room. The Golden Knights killed the remainder of that call and the two teams each had a power-play chance in the middle stanza. However, the only goal would come 5-on-5.

A Wolverine shot hit a pair of players in between the faceoff circle and rebounded directly to Michigan's Garrett Van Whye. Van Whye rifled a slap shot past Marotte to tie the affair at 1-1.

Penalties continued to be a third-period story as Clarkson killed off an infraction less than a minute into the stanza. At 8:40, the Green and Gold found themselves down two players, but the Golden Knights thwarted the Wolverines on that chance as well.

Both goaltenders shut the door for the remainder of regulation and in overtime and the contest ended in a 1-1 tie.

Marotte finished with 34 saves, including four in the five-minute extra session.

The two schools will do battle again tomorrow night at Yost Arena to wrap up the opening weekend.
