CANTON -- The village and town will hire a Gouverneur cleaning firm to do a "deep" cleaning of the Canton Municipal Building prior to that building reopening to the public from the pandemic shutdown.

Village Mayor Michael Dalton told the village board of trustees at their meeting May 18 that a deep clean of the entire municipal building would be a one-time cost of about $2,000. The municipalities might decide to have the firm return after that to do regular COVID-19 cleanings. Dalton said the village currently has a part-time staffer who works 18 hours a week, but that time allotment does not allow the hours required to do a thorough clean of the entire building. "It won't be as deep of a clean as if we contracted out," Dalton said.

The town supervisor and deputy supervisor and village mayor and deputy mayor have been discussing the idea, the mayor said. The municipalities have received two proposals, one from a Watertown firm, and one from a company based in Gouverneur that offered a more competitive price for the job, Dalton said. The Gouverneur company has cleaning contracts for several other buildings in the Canton area, the mayor said.

"Please keep in mind that if we go ahead and do this and it gets us to ground zero so to speak, the first person that walks in the building technically has contaminated the building," the mayor told the board. "But I do think there is a case to be made for moving forward with this." The cleaning job would involve cleaning the carpets and chairs as well as the village and town office spaces in the building.

Dalton said the village would talk with town officials to schedule the cleaning with the Gouverneur firm.
