Canton school board makes appointments, okays retirements & resignation

CANTON – The Canton Central School Board of Education approved two retirements, a resignation and several appointments at its Nov. 7 meeting.

The retirements of Teesa Gillan, from the position of elementary teacher, effective June 30, 2020 and Martha Chisolm, from the position of French teacher, effective Sept. 8, 2020 were approved.

The board okayed the resignation of Mary McGovern from the position of boys’ varsity swim team coach for the 2019-20 season.

Appointments approved included Denise Folsom, clerk pro-tem for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year; Amy Belonge, school bus monitor, effective retroactively to Nov. 1, at a prorated salary of $17,000; Sheila Gordon, school bus monitor, effective retroactively to Nov. 1, 2019, at a prorated salary of $20,050 and Linda Smith, long term substitute for teaching assistant Connie Bessette, effective retroactively to Nov. 4, through about Dec. 18, at a rate of $11.80 per hour for the first 10 days (to be paid $115 per day, retroactively to the first of 10 consecutive days, which does not include days when school is not in session).

Other appointments included Sandra Clark, long term substitute for reading teacher, Colleen Kelly, effective Dec. 5 through Dec. 22 at a rate of $122 per day for the first 10 days (to be paid $230 per day, retroactively to the first of 10 consecutive days, which does not include days when school is not in session); Michelle Garrow, boys varsity swimming coach for the 2019-20 season, at a stipend of $6,247 (this is a modification to the appointment made at the July 11, 2019 meeting); Mary McGovern, unpaid assistant boys varsity swim coach for the 2019-20 season (this is a modification to the appointment made at the July 11, 2019 meeting).

More appointments included Michael Haycook, co-varsity wrestling coach for the winter 2019-20 season, at a stipend of $2,586 (this is a modification to the appointment made at the July 11, 2019 meeting); Dylan Morrison, co-varsity wrestling coach for the winter 2019-20 season, at a stipend of $2,586 (this is a modification to the appointment made at the July 11, 2019 meeting); and Jacob Ladouceur, unpaid assistant boys varsity hockey coach for the 2019-20 season, pending final administrative approval.

Substitutes approved for positions they are certified or qualified for included Logan Barkley, Mary Garwood, Kathleen Willette and Taylor Saltus.

Leaves of absence were approved for Connie Bessette, paid medical leave, from the position of teaching assistant, effective retroactively to Nov. 5, 2019 through about Dec. 18, none of which qualifies under the Family Medical Leave Act; Colleen Kelly, paid medical leave, from the position of reading teacher, effective Dec. 5 through Dec. 20, all of which qualifies under the Family Medical Leave Act; and Cara Coffin, paid/unpaid leave, from the position of elementary teacher, effective Nov. 6 through June 25, 2020, some of which qualifies under the Family Medical Leave Act.
