POTSDAM – Billy’s Deli on Main Street, opened in April 2011, has been closed and plans to reopen it at the former Tardelli’s Restaurant have not come to fruition, according to owner Con Mahoney.

The sandwich shop on Main was a reincarnation of Mahoney’s Billy’s Sub Shop in Canton in the 1970s. That closed after a fire in the building in 1974.

Mahoney, the owner of Mahoney’s Auto Mall on Rt. 11 across from Walmart, had also opened another Billy’s in Canton in Dec, 2011, but he closed that one the following August, citing business disruption and not enough parking during road construction on Main Street.

In Potsdam, Mahoney had gone so far as to put up a Billy’s sign at the former Tardelli’s building at 141 Market St., but the sign had not been approved by village authorities, so it came down.

In the meantime, the Sugar Shack Bakery and Cafe came to an agreement with Mahoney and moved there from farther up Market Street in January, and the space they are taking in the building – more since they opened, Mahoney says – leaves some room in the building that is for rent.
