OGDENSBURG -- Efforts to raise money for the Charles W. Kelly Memorial Park monument continue, with about $25,000 raised so far and an all-you-can-eat breakfast planned for Sunday, Jan. 26 to further the effort.

Kelly, long-time editor of the Ogdensburg Journal and a facet of the local community, died on Oct. 21, 2018.

The Charles W. Kelly Memorial Park Committee launched a community-wide fundraising campaign last year to raise money to erect a memorial at the former Hamilton Street Park.

The committee is working with landscape architect Edward M. Basta to develop a monument that would be located across from St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Tom Hannan, an organizer with the committee tasked with the effort and a neighbor of Kelly’s, said the local newsman had lived near the park.

“It made such perfect sense to rename the park in his honor and memory,” Hannan told North Country This Week.

“We want to honor a North Country citizen who spent his life demonstrating how dedicated volunteers can make a difference in the life of a community,” said Hannan and his wife Debbie.

Many local community organizations, businesses and members have already contributed toward the monument.

“We’ve done very well with the fundraising,” Hannan said.

The organizer said that realistically, the committee hopes to raise between $20,000 and $30,000 for the monument. Any additional money collected over the cost of the purchase and installation will be turned over to the City of Ogdensburg to be placed in a fund for care and maintenance of the park, Hannan said.

The committee initially thought they would like to have the monument installed and then unveiled on Kelly’s birthday on May 10, but given weather and timing considerations they may plan for an official unveiling during the Seaway Festival.

The all-you-can-eat benefit breakfast planned for Sunday will be hosted at the Knights of Columbus Council 258, 721 Hasbrouck St., from 8-11:30 a.m.

The menu will include eggs, hash, sausage, bacon, ham, home fries, sausage gravy, pancakes, French toast, biscuits, fruit cocktail, juice, coffee and tea.

The meal will cost $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for children.
