MASSENA -- Voting on it for the second time in as many months, the village board voted to spend $2,000 on an app that will broadcast public safety notifications and take police tips.
The board voted 3-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 15 to spend $2,000 for one year on the Tip411 app. All of the board members present, Mayor Tim Currier, Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire and Trustee Christine Winston, voted in favor of it.
The motion to spend the $2,000 went in front of the board last month and was voted down 2-2. The two no votes from the September meeting, trustees Francis Carvel and Albert Deshaies, were not at the Tuesday meeting.
Carvel and Deshaies voted no after voicing concerns about the annual cost going up. Lebire said he asked Chief Adam Love to dig more into the specifics and report back.
"The cost would be the same for three years instead of two, and if it was to increase it would be 3 to 5% and it's not guaranteed to go up," Lebire said. "It's a three-year price guarantee, not a three-year commitment.
"We're not required next year to do it. It's a one-year commitment."
He said the app makers told the village they won't sell or use gleaned data.
"They've said in writing they don't use or sell the data gathered from that app," Lebire said.
Once the Massena Police Department gets linked up with the Tip411 app, users can download it for free and select to receive updates from their channel or submit crime tips.
