POTSDAM -- A 7-year-old boy died at Canton-Potsdam Hospital Thursday night before he could be transported to another facility for treatment of injuries sustained during a UTV accident in Potsdam.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office says the boy was on an inner tube being pulled behind the UTV around the yard at 379 Hatch Road east of the village, and was injured when he hit “the one and only tree in the side yard,” a sheriff’s office spokesman said.

The 2017 Honda UTV was being driven in a private yard by two 14-year-old males and was towing the 7-year-old victim and a 6-year-old, who was also injured.

After making a left hand turn the tube drifted to the right striking a wooden fence and large tree, sheriff’s investigators said.

Both the youngsters in the tube were transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for injuries sustained in the incident.

The six-year-old victim was admitted for observation and the seven-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The boy, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to Potsdam and “coded” while awaiting transport to another medical facility. He died at the hospital as resuscitative efforts were underway.

An autopsy was scheduled for today.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Potsdam Police Department, New York State Police, Potsdam Rescue, Parishville Rescue, Potsdam Fire and Stockholm Fire.

The investigation is ongoing.

Investigating officers are Det. Sgt. Caringi, Sgt. Shelly, and Deputies Thivierge, Thomas, and O’Connell.
