Caitlin Syphurs hit two home runs and Allie Courtwright threw a three-hit shutout to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to a 12-0 win over crosstown rival SUNY Canton in a non-league game at SUNY Canton on Thursday evening.
Syphurs tied the school record for home runs in a game, and the first-year outfielder/catcher from Sierra Vista, Ariz., is also tied for the school record for home runs in a season with six.
Syphurs was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Angelina Carney was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Taylor Armijo was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Abrianna Schlickenmayer was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Deanna Sullivan and Elle Gray were both 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Courtwright walked two and struck out four in her second complete game shutout of the season.
St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead in the first, then broke the game open with seven runs in the third inning.
The Saints (20-9) have reached the 20-win mark for the fourth time in program history and for the first time since the 2013 team set a record with 22 wins. SUNY Canton fell to 15-11.
St. Lawrence, which sits in a tie for third place with Clarkson in the Liberty League standings, wraps up the conference schedule with a pair of games against the University of Rochester at Saints Softball Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
