Potsdam, NY – Junior Devin Sorell tied a career-high with 33 points and the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team needed virtually every point in its 74-70 win over Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers dropped to 6-14 and 1-10.

The Knights started off slow, having trouble getting into a groove offensively with their spacing, but late in the first quarter the team started to figure things out. Down by three (11-8) after a Kate Goodell layup with a little over three minutes to go in the period, Clarkson rattled off 10 straight points, capped by a pair of free throws from Kathleen Coloney with 36.6 seconds remaining. Up by four at the end of the first period, Clarkson scored 11 of the first 13 points to start the second, including seven from Devin Sorell. The Golden Knights extended that advantage to as many as 16 before the half as Sorell had a big quarter with 12 points overall. Eventually, the margin settled at 14 at the break.

Sorell had 19 points in the first half and Molly Stewart was flawless from the field by going 4-for-4 for 11 points. For Rensselaer, Kate Goodell shot 4-for-5 from the floor for eight points.

Clarkson expanded its lead to as many as 18 points in the third quarter, but overall the Golden Knights' offense cooled off, shooting just 6-for-21 in the period. That allowed Rensselaer to cut into its deficit, getting back within seven (55-48) in the final minute. It appeared as if the Knights might halt the momentum, however, as Devin Sorell buried a 3-pointer from the wing as the buzzer sounded to end the frame. Though Clarkson would maintain a solid advantage, seeing its lead pushed to 10 points again (64-54), the final moments saw the Engineers truly get back into the game. Krumbhaar made a 3-poitner at the 3:14 mark to get Rensselaer back within seen and a few moments later a Kate Goodell 3-pointer drew the Engineers to within three (71-68) with just 35 seconds to go. Fortunately for the Knights, Devin Sorell was able to convert two more free throws and Kati Gotch added another insurance point to allow Clarkson to hold on for the win.

Sorell finished with a game-high 33 points, tying her career-high that she accomplished against Johnson State in November 2015. It was her third 30-plus point game in her career and a season-high for 2016-17. Stewart closed with 15 points and six rebounds and Alyssia Marsal added 12 boards. Madison Shea also had eight points and six assists. Krumbhaar's 17 points led Rensselaer and Goodell finished with 12 points and eight boards. Elizabeth Eckhardt also tossed in 10 while Shaina Iton produced eight points and 15 rebounds.
