The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team opened up its 2010-11 campaign at Potsdam State on Wednesday night. The Saints, led by first-year student Kelly Legg and senior co-captain Casey Capello, defeated the Bears 74-48.

St. Lawrence improves to 1-0 on the season while Potsdam falls to 0-2.

"We had a few jitters in the first half which caused us to have a lot of turnovers," said Head Coach Dan Roiger. "We played much better in the second half and were much more focused. I thought we played outstanding defense and that is what kept us in the game."

Legg scored a game-high 18 points and added eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals, while Capello added 13 points, four assists and three steals. First-year student Hannah Wilson added three 3-pointers for nine points.

The first half saw a back and forth battle of which neither team could build a substantial lead. The Saints ended the first half with a 30- 21 advantage behind one of Legg's three first-half 3-pointers.

The Saints and the Bears both played high-pressure man-to-man defense in the first half, causing a combined 28 to turnovers.

The Saints pulled away for good when the Bears changed to a 2-3 zone midway through the second half. St. Lawrence worked the high-low post game and 3-point shooting to break the zone and close out the game 74-48 in the season opener.

"My biggest question going into this game was would our first-years be too nervous to perform tonight," added Coach Roiger. "All of the first-years were composed and focused and showed up to play. They were definitely a big part of our win tonight."

The Saints will battle Albany College of Pharmacy at the RIT Tournament on Saturday, November 20th. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
