Saints softball post walk-off win, split on last day in Florida

Taylor Armijo scored on a wild pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the St. Lawrence University softball team a 4-3 win over Kalamazoo in its first game of the day, but the Saints gave up seven unearned runs, including six on four errors in a seven-run first inning, in a 9-1 loss to St. Norbert College on the team's final day of games in Clermont, Florida.

Skylar Hein went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Saints' offense in the opener. Armijo was also 2-for-3 against Kalamazoo, while Gabby Slater was also 2-for-2 with a double against St. Norbert.

Caroline Young threw a complete game in the win for the Saints to finish the trip with a 5-1 record in the circle.

St. Lawrence 4, Kalamazoo 3

Armijo's game-winning run capped a back-and-forth affair which saw both teams take leads, with neither team lead by more than one run.

Hein got the Saints started with an RBI single to center to score Elle Gray from second base in the first, but Kalamazoo tied the game in the top of the second, with Alaina Kirschman hitting a single up the middle to score Nina Skalkiewicz.

The Hornets took a 2-1 lead when Alyssa Heitkamp scored on an error in the fourth, but Hein drove in Armijo and Gray with a drive through the center of the infield in the fifth inning to give the Saints a 3-2 advantage.

Skalkiewicz drove in Ashley Schiffer with a single to center with one out in the top of the seventh to tie the score and extend the game to the bottom of the seventh, but Armijo and Gray worked one-out walks, and after an infield fly ball for the second out, Hein was intentionally walked to load the bases. On the first pitch of the next at bat, the ball skipped in the dirt and rolled to the backstop, allowing Armijo to scamper home for her team-best 14th run of the spring.

The Saints were out-hit 12-4, but Young stranded 11 Hornet baserunners, allowing three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts and no walks in her fifth win in a week. Kalamazoo starter Keelin McManus took the loss, allowing all four runs on four hits with two walk and five strikeouts. Sammi Luzadre came on in relief after Armijo's walk.

McManus and Szalkiewicz were both 2-for-3 for the Hornets, while Hayleigh Alamo and Schiffer were 2-for-4.

St. Norbert 9, St. Lawrence 1 (5 innings)

The Green Knights pounced on the Saints for seven runs — including six unearned runs — in the first inning before coasting to a win over the Saints in a five-inning run-rule-shortened game in St. Lawrence's final game in Florida.

Sarah Koltermann did the bulk of the damage, sending a three-run home run over the center field fence to give St. Norbert a 5-0 lead and chase St. Lawrence starting pitcher McKailey Lyndaker from the circle.

Abigail Chada added an RBI single in the second to give the Green Knights an 8-0 lead in the second inning.

Gray extended the game to the bottom of the fifth with a two-out RBI double to center to score Slater, who led off the inning with a double, but St. Norbert's Taylor Ullman drove in the clinching run with a two-out RBI single to left center.

Chada was 2-for-3 for St. Norbert, while Carley Frauenhoff was 2-for-4.

Sofia Adams hit a double in the fourth inning for the Saints.

Ellie Olsen earned the win for the Green Knights, allowing one run on five hits with nine strikeouts and five walks. Lyndaker took the loss, allowing five runs (one earned) on three hits. Slater finished the game, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout in 4.1 innings.
