No. 13/12 Providence spoil the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team's home opener on Friday night, as the Saints were shut out by the visiting Friars, 6-0, at the Roos House Ice Arena on the campus of SUNY Canton.

Though they managed to weather the storm last weekend en route to their first win, penalty troubles proved costly against a Providence team with a lot of offensive firepower. The Friars finished 2-for-5 with the man advantage and the Saints seemed to struggle to find a rhythm with some more special teams' time on Friday night.

After a fairly even first period, a power play goal from Patrick Moynihan in the closing seconds tipped the momentum to the visitors as Providence took a 1-0 lead with the eventual game winner.

The Friars added three more in the middle frame, including their second power play goal of the night off the stick of Tyce Thompson during a 5-on-3 with a pair of defensemen in the box for the Saints.

After the fourth Providence goal midway through the second period, starting netminder Daniel Mannella was replaced by first-year Francis Boisvert, who made his collegiate debut Friday in the Roos House.

Mannella finished with 27 saves in just under 31 minutes between pipes, while Boisvert made 10 saves in 29:14 minutes played.

The Friars tacked on two quick goals in the third period, including Parker Ford's second of the night at the 3:29 mark to make it 6-0, less than a minute after a prior goal was waived off when the officials conferred and called a hand pass on the Friars.

Alex Gilmour and Keenan Suthers led St. Lawrence with five shots apiece, while their linemate Zach Risteau finished with four.

Providence goaltender Michael Lackey finished with 27 saves in the win.

With the loss, the Saints drop to 1-2-0, while the Friars improve to 2-1-0.

St. Lawrence will host the University of Vermont on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. for another non-conference matchup in the Roos House Ice Arena.
