Saints men's basketball remains strong against Dutchmen

The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team defeated Union College 90-85 on Saturday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton, N.Y., to sweep the season series with the Dutchmen.

The Saints were led by sophomore Ben Crawford with 24 points, while junior Riley Naclerio added 21 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Willie Zachery tallied 16 points and senior Kyle Kobis added 10.

The Saints were up 21-13 with just over 10 minutes to go in the first. Union came back to tie the game 35-35 heading into the locker room. Strong scoring opportunities for the Saints leading off the second half included a dunk by Naclerio to push the Saints' lead over the Dutchmen to 53-45.

The Dutchmen fought back and took the lead with just over five minutes to go in the second half, as junior Greg King landed a 3-pointer off a rebound from a shot by sophomore Kevin McNoble. It wasn't long before the Saints regained control with six unanswered points with under three minutes to play.Union again tied the game 83-83 with another 3-pointer from senior Deshon Burgess with 1:26 to go. The Saints hit a number of free throws down the stretch to pull out the victory.

"The guys will continue to grind every game and look for a way to win, whether that's hitting a three or grabbing a rebound," said head coach Chris Downs. "It's the second round of league play and we need to grind every game to come out on top."

The Dutchmen were led by Burgess, who scored 21 points and senior Wade McNamara added 19.

The Saints are now tied for first in the league, as they improved to 16-3 overall and 9-1 in league play. Union fell to 9-8 and 5-4.

The Saints return to action next Friday night taking on Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. at 8 p.m.
