(Potsdam, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s basketball team ended their first semester falling to Albany College of Pharmacy 84-75 Sunday afternoon in Potsdam.

The Roos are now 1-5 overall and are off until Jan. 7 when they play at Johnson State College.

The first four minutes of Sunday’s game saw the lead go back and forth as the lead changed hands five times.

After SUNY Canton had fallen behind by three points Scott Dixon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) buried a 3-pointer and Tony Valentin (Perth Amboy, N.J.) converted a layup to help the Roos regain the lead at 13-12 with just under 15 minutes left in the first half.

The Panthers then reeled off 14 straight points to open a 23-13 lead with 11:35 remaining. The Roos fought their way back, used a 15-5 run and eventually tied the game at 28-28 with 5:27 on the clock after an Irving Cato (New York, N.Y.) layup.

But Albany again countered and closed the half on a 15-8 run to take a 43-37 lead into the locker room.

The lead would hold in double digits for most of the second half as the Panthers continued to hit key shots from the outside as they finished nine of 18 from three-point range.

The Roos had one more burst and a Khalid Vaughn (New York, N.Y.) three-point play closed the gap to 62-57 with 8:26 left in the game. But SUNY Canton foul trouble allowed Albany to convert on several inside baskets down the stretch and the lead never dipped below eight points the rest of the game.

Silvon John (Bronx, N.Y.) poured in a season-high 24 points and snagged 15 rebounds for his second straight double-double and third of the season. Valentin finished with 20 points, three rebounds and three assists. Vaughn had eight points and four rebounds and Cato and Jajuan Williams (Richlands, N.C.) each had seven points apiece.

Zach Bratek led the Panthers with 26 points, 10 rebounds and three assists and Casey Redfern added 16 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
