Red Dragons use free throws to hold off Bears, 68-62

POTSDAM, N.Y.-- SUNY Oneonta (5-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) edged out the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) 68-62 Friday evening. Freshman forward Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led the Bears with 17 points and tallied six rebounds.

The first few minutes was a back-and-forth battle between both teams. Senior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) hit a jumper to start an 8-3 run. During the stretch Elliott scored four and senior guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) scored two. Potsdam ended the first up 18-15.

The Red Dragons started the second quarter on a 7-0 stretch. Junior guard Leanne Corso (Commack, N.Y./Commack) started the rally with a three pointer, while senior guard Teresa Anken (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) and junior guard Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) contributed with a basket each, giving Oneonta a 22-18 lead with 7:39 left. The run was halted with a layup by sophomore center Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) and created an 8-0 Potsdam run for the next four minutes. Smith led the charge with five points. A couple of three point plays from Luckie and sophomore guard Carly Shear (Newark, N.Y./Newark) and a jumper from junior guard Leah Giavotto (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) kept the Bears ahead 34-33 entering halftime.

The Red Dragons tried to pull away at the beginning of the third, but Luckie kept it close with a pair of threes. Under four minutes in the third, Anken hit a jumper to give Oneonta a 45-40 advantage. On the next possession Elliott answered with a jumper of her own making it a three point deficit. Before the third quarter concluded, Amalbert scored a fastbreak layup and freshman guard Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) hit a pair of free throws, keeping the Red Dragon lead at three.

Amalbert and Corso scored a basket to give Oneonta a 51-44 lead, their largest lead of the game with 8:53 to go. Potsdam answered back with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to one with 7:12 remaining. Hunter converted a three point play, Elliott made a basket and Luckie drilled one from deep during the stretch. At 4:36, Hunter made a layup to give the Bears a 59-57 lead. Senior forward Madeline Frank (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) hit a three pointer to tie the game at 62, with 1:05 remaining. On the following Oneonta possession, Frank hit a pair of free throws to give the Red Dragons a 64-62 lead with 29 seconds left. Potsdam had a chance to tie, but could not convert. Anken went on to hit four free throws and give Oneonta the 68-62 victory.

Luckie went three-for-three from beyond the arc and finished with 16 points. Hunter ended with 13 points and a pair of assists, while Smith finished with nine points and the team high three assists.

Frank finished with a 11 point and 11 rebound double-double. Anken had 17 points along with three steals for the Red Dragons and Amalbert had 14 points.

Potsdam shot 43.6 percent from the field and Oneonta shot 38.5 percent. The Red Dragons outshot the Bears 41-35.

Potsdam is back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against New Paltz in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
