Newman earns first win of 2019 as Roos baseball splits to open Clemente Cup; Carbone earns 100th win

Lynn, MA – Zack Newman pitched two innings of no hit ball to earn his first win of the season as the SUNY Canton baseball team split a pair of contests at the Clemente Cup at Fraser Field in Massachusetts on Saturday.

After a 13-3 loss to host Fisher College in the opener, the Roos bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. The win against the Owls was the 100th career victory for SUNY Canton Head Coach Joe Carbone.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

The Roos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Brian Santana and Edward Malinoski, Jr. scored a pair of runs off Fisher errors in the opening inning. The Falcons responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame and the hosts scored at least one run each in every inning to secure a 13-3 victory.

Canton's other run came in the third inning when Don Louis Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice and Brandon Bautista scored on a Falcon miscue.

Jake Vierno took the loss giving up eight earned runs with eight strike outs in four innings. Zach LeBlanc earned the win for the Falcons surrendering two earned runs over seven innings with four strike outs.

Collin Lynk led the Roos with two hits, while Santana, Malinoski and Bautista had one hit each.

GAME 2

The Roos scored four runs in their final two at-bats and Zack Newman threw a pair of scoreless innings as Canton won the nightcap, 6-3.

Brett Hoberman went 2-for-3 driving in a pair of runs, while Jesse Iacovetta, Ben Miller and Bautista also had a hit an RBI each. Malinoski drove in the Roos other run.

Canton plated one run each in the second and third innings as Hoberman and Malinoski produced sacrifice flies. UMPI posted one run in the second and two in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

Hoberman tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the seventh and Iacovetta, Bautista and Miller all had an RBI each in the eighth.

Newman earned the win striking out five batters without allowing a single hit in two innings. Collin Trathen was credited with the no-decision after striking out nine batters giving up three runs over seven innings.

Braydon Kennedy took the loss for the Owls surrendering four earned runs with five strike outs in seven innings.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Roos square off with NVU-Lyndon on Sunday at 4 PM in the Clemente Cup. The team will look to qualify for the championship game which will be played Sunday evening at 7 p.m.
