Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team scored seven runs in the final two innings to nearly overcome an eight-run difference but fell 15-14 to Houghton College on Friday.

The Highlanders improve to 13-20 overall and 2-13 in Empire 8 play, while the Roos drop to 7-25 and 2-13.

Houghton batted around scoring nine runs in the opening inning behind a triple and two-run homer from David Wessells. Houghton extended its lead to 11 with a pair of runs in the top of the third but Canton answered with four in the bottom half of the inning.

Trevor Keleher and Travis Schindler opened the frame with back-to-back singles and Seth Douglas doubled home Keleher on a ball into the right center gap. Wilson Matos laced a 2 RBI double down the left field line and Brandon Welch plated Matos on a base hit through the right side.

The Highlanders added two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings before the Roos responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth. Keleher scored on a wild pitch before Tom Brusca came through with a two out 2 RBI single up the middle.

Canton added four runs in the eighth as Welch singled and Matos scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. After Houghton hit a pair of batters to load the bases with two outs Brett Hoberman hit a bases clearing 3 RBI double off the wall. The Roos got within one on a Matos three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the ninth with one out but were unable to complete the comeback.

The baseball team is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Houghton for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
