A goal 46 seconds into overtime gave the third-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team a 5-4 overtime victory over Cornell on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson finishes the regular season 25-4-5 overall and 19-1-2 in ECAC Hockey. Cornell is 17-7-5 overall and 13-4-5 in conference.

"I will give the team a lot of credit for coming back and winning that game today," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "We dug ourselves a pretty good hole after the first period, but kept battling and clawing our way to get back into it. Cornell came out strong pressuring us all over the ice making it difficult for us to make plays, but we found ways as the game went on to create opportunities for ourselves that we were able to capitalize on. In hindsight, it was probably a great game for us to play in heading into playoffs as you always seem to have some games that take you on a roller coaster ride in the post season. How you are able to manage those types of games and respond is always important."

The Big Red stormed out to a 3-1lead in the first period with all three goals coming on power-plays. Brianna Veerman scored the first goal for Cornell 6:21 into the game, but Clarkson answered at 13:36 with Jessica Gillham scoring. Amanda Titus had the assist on Gillham's goal. However, Cornell scored at 15:37 through Kaitlin Doering and again at 19:18 with Amy Curlew scoring.

The second period was controlled by the Golden Knights and co-captain Cayley Mercer. Mercer tallied her first goal of the game 18:53 into the second frame, with Ella Shelton assisting on the goal which came during a Clarkson power-play. Mercer then added a second power-play goal just 13 seconds later, with co-captain Savannah Harmon providing the assist. That tied the game at 3 heading into the final 20 minutes.

In the third period, Clarkson took its first lead at 14:51. It was Josiane Pozzebon who scored with the goal being Clarkson's third power-play score of the game. The lead was short lived though, as Grace Graham scored for Cornell just 1:03 after Pozzebon's goal.

With the game headed for overtime, Clarkson had a chance to win in the sudden death period for the first time this season, as the Golden Knights are 0-1-5 in overtime games so far. It was Loren Gabel who sealed the win just 46 seconds into the overtime. Michaela Pejzlova had the assist on the game-winning score.

Clarkson finished with a 30-17 advantage in shots. That edge increased to 24-9 over the final two periods and overtime. Each team scored three power-play goals with Clarkson getting five extra man opportunities and Cornell receiving six. Shea Tiley made 13 saves for Clarkson while Paula Voorheis had 25 stops for Cornell.

Clarkson will host Rensselaer in the ECAC Quarterfinals next weekend.
