The St. Lawrence University field hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss against Liberty League opponent Vassar College on Friday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, NY.
The loss moves the Saints to 1-4 in conference and 7-7 overall, while the Brewers improve to 2-3 in conference and 7-6 on the season after knocking off St. Lawrence for the first time in school history.
The Saints outshot Vassar 17-10 and had a sound 16-9 advantage in penalty corners in the game, but were unable to solve goaltender Maggie Brelis. The visitors controlled much of the offense early in the game, but the Brewers were the more opportunistic team, taking a 1-0 lead at 7:09 of the first half. Kate Hwang's first goal of the season came on a rebound, as she scored on St. Lawrence sophomore goalie Nicole Matos to put her team on top.
With Brelis making three saves in both the first and second halves to keep the Saints off the scoreboard, Dara Davis' third goal of the season put the game away for the Brewers. After Maura McCarthy sent a shot on goal, Davis scored on the rebound for a 2-0 lead at 38:54.
The Scarlet and Brown pick up its offensive attack in the second half, including a golden opportunity to cut the deficit in half with 12:28 left in play. However, junior Courtney Cartier's bid from close range deflected off the post and stayed out, allowing Vassar to run out the clock on a 2-0 win.
St. Lawrence will complete the 2011 Liberty League regular season tomorrow when it faces Union College in Schenectady, NY at 2:00pm.
