Bears women's lacrosse late surge leads to victory over Fredonia

POTSDAM, N.Y. –The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-9, 2-5 SUNYAC) picked up a 14-10 victory against the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils (3-10, 0-6 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon. After a close first half, the Blue Devils tied the game briefly in the second half, but the Bears late run helped them secure the 14-10 win. Senior captain Cayla O' Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) led the Bears with five goals and fellow senior captain Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) made 10 saves for the win.

The Bears struck first as senior midfielder Meaghan Paige (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) split two defenders and bounced the ball into the net at the 25:30 mark. Sophomore midfielder Zoe Morgenroth (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) made it 2-0 with a low shot on Fredonia sophomore goalie Melanie Orffeo (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence). The Blue Devils rallied to tie with two goals in two minutes, beginning a pattern that lasted all day. Freshman attacks Alyssa Kissel (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Natalie Prims (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) scored at 19:26 and 17:20 to even the score. The Bears answered with a 3-0 run to make it 5-2. Sophomore midfielder Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/T.A. Blakelock) regained the lead with a free-position shot at 16:41. Sophomore midfielder Zoe Morgenroth (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) did the same at 15:47 and junior attacker Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) capped the run by scoring inside the attack area off the pass from Morgenroth. Following a successful free-position shot by sophomore attacker Ali Coon (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia), the Blue Devils tied up the game with goals from Kissel and junior attacker Madeline Haney (Macedon, N.Y./Victor) at 13:07 and 7:50. After another free-position goal from O'Connor at 4:46, Kissel countered 31 seconds later, getting separation and finding the bottom corner of the net. With 3:17 left, the Bears scored the last goal of the half after Stark passed out of a double-team and found Thacker for her second marker. The Bears led 7-6 lead at halftime.

The Blue Devils struck first in the second half when Kissel scored her fourth goal of the contest by finding the net in the attack area, while a man-up at 26:47. Junior attacker Ashley Burrowes (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) made it 8-7 Potsdam with a free-position tally at 24:00. Kissel tied the score a final time at 21:15 with her fifth goal, after running down the middle and burying a pass from Coon. O'Connor powered the Bears the rest of the way, scoring four of Potsdam's final six goals. She netted her second goal of the game after crossing in front of the goal and finding the space to finish over Orffeo at 20:20. O'Connor then got her hat-trick at 19:05 after her pass got deflected by a defender, but she was able to regain possession and score inside. Coon scored a man-up goal to help pull the Blue Devils back within 10-9 at 17:50, but the Bears went on a 4-0 run to put the contest away. Paige scored another man-up marker at 16:37 followed by two in-a-row from O'Connor and one from junior attack Lane Perl (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) to make it 14-9 with 6:32 to play. Haney scored with 4:29 left, but the Bears had the clock advantage and secured the victory.

Morgenroth and Paige finished with two goals each for the Bears. Kissel led the Blue Devils with five goals. Coon and Haney each had two goals. Orffeo finished with seven saves. O'Connor registered a contest-best five ground balls, seven draw controls and seven caused turnovers. Burrowes picked up five draw controls.

Potsdam is back in action on Thursday when the Bears host SUNY Poly at 4 p.m.
