There is a refugee camp on the Greek island of Samos that welcomes persons fleeing upheavals in the Middle East and North Africa. Built to house <700 persons, the camp now supports ten times that number. My wife & I are privileged to know one of the volunteer educators at Samos and have been helping coordinate local logistics and support for them. As you might imagine, these people need everythingand whether that is warm wishes on their Facebook page, [1] a box of band-aides or even your willing boots in their camp, they will cherish it.
One program I am committing myself to is their need for technology infrastructure. Samos has sent out a call on social media for working laptops and tablets. With or without batteries, with or without hard drives. I will be collecting these, verifying them and starting them on their way to Greece. Even if they are older and slower they may still be useful.
I will also securely overwrite all user data on the machines before shipment if you ask.
I will ship boxes containing ten devices each and hope to ship 30 units this year. If you have an older laptop - or if a parent or friend does - please consider sending it off to Samos. They will be used for education, asylum paperwork, and keeping connected with loved ones.
