Opinion: Go ahead, insult me for having a brain, says Canton resident

When I was in high school, another woman in my class called me “a brain”. I didn’t realize it at the time, but she meant it as an insult. Being smart as an insult: I just don’t get it.

Americans say, “I was never very good at math” and wear that as a badge of honor. The United States ranked 38 out of 71 countries in a Pew report from 2015.

The insult of today is “elitist”. To be elite is to be superior in some way. That’s not an insult.

Liberal means to be generous. I’d like to believe I am that. We should help those who need help. I believe that. This is also not an insult.

Calling me a liberal elitist, with a sneer in your tone, doesn’t make sense. It is a compliment, like being called a brain.

So, you just keep those insults coming: liberal, elite, beautiful, witty, intelligent. I’m a big girl; I can take it.
