Massena High senior receives Rosenbaum Memorial Scholarship

Kelsey Baxter will receive $500 toward her first year of college studies. She will matriculate this fall at the Albany College of Pharmacy, where she plans pre-med studies.

She is the daughter of Jessica and Michael Baxter of Riverside Parkway in Massena.

The annual scholarship, named in memory of two lifelong Massena residents and Massena High graduates, goes to a graduating Massena High School who has made a significant commitment to volunteer service.

Kelsey ranks 7th in her graduating class of 186. She is being honored for her commitment to several community causes, notably as an ongoing volunteer in the emergency room at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. In a letter of recommendation, Jan Normile, a Massena High teacher, said, “She has fully embraced this opportunity by working both night and day shifts and taking on all the tasks given to her. The fact that Kelsey drives such a great distance to pursue her passion to become a doctor and help others is remarkable.”

She also volunteers with the Salvation Army, Red Cross blood drives, VFW dinners, a rabies clinic and the school’s Link Crew, which mentors students who are transitioning to high school.

The Rosenbaum scholarship is funded by grandchildren of Saul and Jeannette Rosenbaum, whose two children, Ruth and Joel, graduated from Massena High School in the 1940s. Saul Rosenbaum owned and operated a men’s clothing store for many years on Main Street in Massena.
