The Virginia Smith Outstanding Citizen Award is given to residents who are active volunteers and who exemplify the adage “neighbors caring for neighbors.”

Gowing is well known in the community for contributions in various ways to the Colton Hepburn Library, Zion Episcopal Church, and Higley Flow State Park (HFSP), in addition to Colton-Pierrepont Central School, where she teaches second grade.

The award is part of Colton’s annual Winterfest, Jan. 23 to 26 this year. The celebration kicks off with the popular all you can eat spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Colton-Pierrepont Central School cafeteria, where there will be a break at 5 p.m. for presentation of the award.

The complete Winterfest schedule with details is on the town’s website, www.townofcolton.com.
