CANTON -- The 2019 recipients of the Zonta Club of Canton’s recognition of individuals who have made an impact on the lives of those they serve through employment or volunteer work are Linda Potter, Sherry Stone, and Jamie Reed.

Each year in March, the club presents community members with its symbol, a long-stemmed yellow rose, to coincide with International Women’s Day.

Linda Potter is the center of her home, active in her church and with St. Lawrence Valley Hospice, and is a valuable member of the Canton community. She offers seminars and workshops, especially for women, through her organization called Nautilus Retreats where she serves as a coach on a variety of topics. She has been instrumental in establishing and maintaining programs for women and children in the East African country of Malawi through the Women of Grace Widows’ Fund, which works “to alleviate the extreme poverty faced by widows in Malawi by providing funding to meet basic food, shelter, and safety needs, while creating opportunities and resources that enable and empower widows to establish their own self-sufficiency and independence, regardless of religious affiliation.”

Sherry Stone, Community Bank vice president and branch services administrator, is a committed community member who is always quietly involved in a wide variety of events going on in the Canton area. Each year around the holidays, for example, she works to make sure that families in need receive food baskets and gifts. She has been involved in many sports organizations such as the Canton Pee Wee Association and the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club and shares her volunteer talents during Dairy Princess Weekend and with Canton Chamber of Commerce activities.

Jamie Reed works for the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services. She has been a foster and an adoptive parent for more than a decade. Her involvement in the Canton community is well documented as she volunteers whenever she can in the Canton Central Schools and in the community. Whenever she hears about a family in need, she rallies for help. As busy as she is, Jamie graduated from SUNY Canton in 2018 where she received the Outstanding Baccalaureate Graduate Award in Applied Psychology.

The Canton Area Zonta Club honors Linda Potter, Sherry Stone and Jamie Reed with its 2019 Rose Day Recipient Award as representative of the spirit of this endeavor, which is to improve the community in which they live.
