Workshop for food entrepreneurs, farmers planned March 6-7 in Canton

CANTON -- Author and farmer Kristin Kimball will deliver a keynote address and reading to kick off an upcoming training workshop for food entrepreneurs and farmers March 6 and 7.

Kimball’s reading will be hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County on March 6 at 7 p.m. in the Laurentian Room at the Best Western.

Kristin Kimball has co-operated a year-round full diet community supported agriculture (CSA) farm in Essex, New York for over a decade. This innovative model and the ensuing lifestyle has been fodder for two books.

Kimball will share excepts from her newest book, “Good Husbandry,” along with insights into the complicated world of relationships and farming in the Adirondack North Country. The reading is free and open to the public.

“I would love to give people a glimpse of the deep truth and details of what it takes to pull food out of the ground. Farming is the only business that produces something that everyone needs every day, three times a day,” says Kimball.

The reading is a precursor to a full-day learning opportunity for those interested in operating a food business or diversifying their farm to include additional products. On March 7, Kimball will open the day with Creating Farm Products to Feed a Community Year-Round.

The program will include four workshop sessions, a full lunch and a closing farmer entrepreneur panel at the Extension Learning Farm.

This unique day of programming costs $15 and will cover the regulatory basics for operating a food business as well as the lived experience of regionally based entrepreneurs.
