Scottish Festival
HAMMOND: Hammond Scottish Festival, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with bagpipes, Gaelic fiddling, kilts, Highland games demonstrations and a variety of family fun activities; sign-in or registration at Hammond Central School 8-9 a.m. for Scottish-themed races; 8:30, the Wee Lads and Lassies Scottish Obstacle Course begins with a children's race where kids are wielding “swords,” climbing hay bales, winding through mazes, storming a castle, and shooting a target “with bows and arrows;” 9:15, bagpiper leads participants in the 5K Kilt Run/Walk down Main Street to the start line; after the races, Hammond Museum hosting Scottish activities, music, dance, and exhibits; bagpiper, Jeff Forsythe, at 10 a.m., reading of Robert Burns poems; band Steel City Rovers to perform thrice; other entertainment by Ikey's Crossing, harp and guitar duo, fiddlers, the intergenerational group HUG's (Hammond Ukulele Group), and young Scottish dancers; for kids, six Scottish themed relay races, enjoy face painting, balloon twisting, and a petting zoo; blacksmith and spinner and weaver demos; artisan marketplace; food, drink; throughout the day, Daven Brigham of Tug Hill Heavies will demonstrate Highland games such as the hammer throw, caber toss, and stone put; admission: $5, or $20 for family of four or more, 5 and under free.

Tire take back
GOUVERNEUR: People who have waste tires to dispose of can bring them to a no cost “Tire Take Back” event, 12:30-4:30 p.m., at the Gouverneur Transfer Station, 1831 US Highway 11; residents will be permitted to dispose of up to eight car or light truck tires for free; tires must be separated from rims; larger tires, and those still on rims will not be accepted.
