Justice conference

CANTON: “Justice for All: Community Conversations on Crime and Imprisonment in the North Country” conference at Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton from Oct. 18-20; 10:30 a.m.; worship service on the topic of Justice for ALL, with sermon delivered by Dr. Margaret Kent Bass who formerly worked at SLU, and who is now living in Vermont, working with their criminal justice reform initiatives; free and open to the public, online registration: www.uucantonny.org.

Ranger School event

WANAKENA: College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) - The Ranger School, will host an open house, morning to mid-afternoon; presentations from faculty and staff on the unique academic and student life experiences, admissions and financial aid, a campus tour with students, lunch in the dining hall and a mini-field experience; register visit https://www.esf.edu/admissions/rsvisit.asp.

Thank-you gathering

OGDENSBURG: Ogdensburg First United Methodist Church hosting thank-you gathering for community and neighborhood members at the church, 2-4 p.m.; church recently completed a steeple repair and painting project which took most of the summer; desserts and hot beverages will be served; Pastor Donna Fitchette at 315-956-1651.

Lincoln’s Avengers

CANTON: Jan Couture will present the next North Country Civil War Round Table topic “Lincoln’s Avengers,” 2 p.m., at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association (SLCHA), 3 E. Main St.; Couture is a retired teacher and Saranac town historian; according to Couture, five men from Saranac were members of Lincoln’s Avengers – part of the Sixteenth New York Cavalry – which aided in the capture of John Wilkes Booth; www.slcha.org.

Dinner theatre

CANTON: Canton United Methodist Church will host a dinner theatre production of “Virgil and the City Slickers,” 2 p.m., will feature meat or veggie lasagna, salad, drinks and dessert of brownies and ice cream; dessert buffet offered after the show; $15 for adults, children 12 and younger pay $6; seating is limited; call Carol at 315-379-9709 or the church at 315-386-4500 to reserve tickets.

Meet The Artists

WADDINGTON: Meet The Artists event, The Marketplace at Clark House, 14 Main St. to host four local artists, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; artists Cheryl Spadaccini, Steven Cobb, Carol Backus, and Jeff Davis on site and painting in a variety of mediums; will also have works on display at Lake St. Lawrence Arts Gallery; refreshments available.

Breast cancer event

POTSDAM: St. Lawrence Health System’s Center for Cancer Care in Potsdam will host breast cancer awareness lunch, 2-3:30 p.m., Sergi’s Potsdam Italian Restaurant Pizzeria and Banquet Hall, 10 Market St.; special guests include Hanspreet Kaur, MD, medical oncologist; and Gwen Bonner, MD, general surgeon; staff from the “All About Me” post-mastectomy boutique will provide educational information; free and open to all cancer survivors and their families and friends, as well as interested community members; RSVPs required by Tuesday, Oct. 15, call Center for Cancer Care, 315-261-5890

Can and bottle

POTSDAM: SUNY Potsdam Women's Basketball Team will hold a can and bottle drive 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; trailer (furnished by NCC Systems) set up outside of Maxcy Hall; players and staff will be present to help unload bags and assist you; money raised will be used to provide scholarships to the annual Potsdam Summer Basketball Camp, as well as funds for the basketball program; to schedule a home pickup for Saturday, Oct. 19 or Sunday, Oct. 20, contact Coaches Brittany Cohen (315-559-4943), Michael Busby (315-767-9466) or Michael Martin (315-212-0946); donations also accepted.
