POTSDAM – People who would like to know how to take advantage of sun power for cooking and arm power for laundry will be interested in the Ecological Laundry and Solar Cooking Workshop at noon Saturday, July 23 at the Potsdam Farmers Market. The rain date is Saturday, July 30.
Caron Collins, a local business owner and SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music faculty, was looking for ways to make her household more sustainable. She found the Sun Oven and the Wonder Wash, allowing her to do her laundry and cook food year-round without using any electricity.
She will demonstrate these products at the workshop, sponsored by the Sustainable Living Project (SLP).
The Sun Oven uses no electricity, firewood, gas or fossil fuels to cook a hearty meal or bake some cookies. There is more on that through the SLP website, www.SustainableLivingProject.net, under Year-Round Events.
Collins will also demonstrate the Wonder Wash device, which can be used by people wishing to clean their clothes in their homes and for students in their dorms without using electricity. It will hold up to five pounds of clothes.
Both appliances will be on view after 10 a.m. at the market prior to the workshop.
The Rustic Riders, a country/folk music band from Tupper Lake, play starting at 11 a.m.
Registration for this event is suggested. There is no fee, though donations to benefit the Sustainable Living Project & Local Living Festival are appreciated.
The SLP coordinates year-round workshops cleaving to their motto "Sharing Knowledge from the Past - Building Skills for the Future" and is a project of Seedcorn, a non-profit educational organization.
