SLC Arts Council offers music, crafts, magic in its latest class offerings

POTSDAM – Young and old can learn to play blues guitar, make a tribal mask, or put a few tricks up their sleeves by participating in the latest class offerings from the St. Lawrence County Arts Council, all held on the second floor of downtown Snell Hall.

Coming up in August:

• Blues Guitar with Kevin Irwin – Mondays & Wednesdays, Aug 9, 11, 16, 19 from 6-7:30 p.m. Novice students will be able to accompany soloists, vocalists, and/or their own singing in standard blues songs. More advanced students will understand variations in 12 bar blues chord progressions, and demonstrate ample skills in improvisation. $60 for 4 classes, bring a guitar. Pencil, paper, and a music stand is handy as well.

• Magic Club for Ages 7-14 with Rich Tenace – Monday, Aug. 16 from 3:30-5 p.m. This beginning magic class continues to teach youngsters basic tricks with ropes, cards, coins, and sponge balls. Monthly classes in this series are every third Monday night. $15, plus $10 materials fee for the first class – no materials fees for subsequent classes, students need to register for each session separately and bring materials previously purchased.

• Gourd Masks with Andree Dennis Newton – Saturday, Aug. 28 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. for teens & adults. Andree is a skilled traditional Native American artist residing in Old Forge, NY. In this gourd mask workshop, she will work with students to create their own original gourd spirit mask. $42, plus $20 materials fee.
