In New York State boaters must hold a safety certificate if they wish to: • operate a personal watercraft (such as a Sea-Doo, Waverunner, or Jet-Ski) and are at least 14 years of age. Anyone without a certificate must have a person 18 or older with a safety certificate on board.
• operate a motorboat other than a personal watercraft and you were born May 1, 1996 or after.
Those younger than 10 years old may operate a motorboat (non-personal watercraft) only if someone over 18 with a certificate is on board with you.
