Red Cross blood drives planned across St. Lawrence County in May

The American Red Cross needs donors to give blood during Trauma Awareness Month this May and throughout the year to help ensure that trauma centers are prepared the moment an injured patient arrives.

The following upcoming blood donation opportunities are scheduled from May 1-23:

• Canton -- May 2, 1-6 p.m., Morley Wesleyan Church, 7254 County Road 270

• De Kalb Junction -- May 20, 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Hermon DeKalb Central School, 709 E. De Kalb Rd.

• Gouverneur -- May 3, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., BOCES Southwest Tech Center, 3606 St. Highway 58; May 16, 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Gouverneur Hospital, 77 W. Barney St.

• Harrisville -- May 16, 1-6 p.m., Harrisville Fire Department, 14226 Church St.

• Heuvelton -- May 8, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Heuvelton Central School, 87 Washington St.

To donate blood, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
