Peak Moment TV will interview a recovering vegetarian and discuss adapting to big changes in oil availability in soon-to-air cable shows.

Now in its third year, the Peak Moment programs air every week at 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday on WCKN, Time Warner Channel 30. Peak Moment explores locally reliant living for challenging times. The programs are underwritten locally by The Center for Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University and the Seymour Family of Potsdam.

On May 16 and 17 at 7 pm, Peak Moment host Janaia Donaldson will have a conversation with author Lierre Keith, self-described a recovering 20-year vegan. Keith says what we eat is destroying both our bodies and the planet. She is the author of The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, Sustainability.

While she passionately opposes factory farming of animals, she maintains that humans require nutrient-dense animal foods for good health. A grain-based diet is the basis for degenerative diseases we take for granted (diabetes, cancer, heart disease) -- diseases of civilization. Annual grain production is destroying topsoil and creating deserts on a planetary scale.

Nature creates complex polycultures like in a forest or prairie, with many interdependent species of plants and animals building topsoil and much more. Agriculture of annual crops (grains) means clearing the land down to bare, lifeless soil each year - what she calls “biocide”, essentially an ethnic cleansing. Learn more at her website, http://lierrekeith.com.

On May 23 and 24, Peak Moment will present “Managing the 21st Century’s Sustainability Crises” and on May 30 and 31 the topic will be “Peak Oil — Adapting for Big Changes Ahead.”

In the weeks and months to come, topics covered will include local food production, renewable energy, transportation alternatives, sustainable building, preparedness and psychological, business, and governmental responses.

All the programs are available on the internet at www.wordpress.peakmoment.tv/conversations/ in both video and audio format.

In addition, more than 60 Peak Moment shows are available on DVDs which can be borrowed from the Potsdam Public Library or by interlibrary loan from the collection of shows purchased for broadcast locally.
